Free modded Minecraft server hosting on Severoo means a Java Edition server that runs Fabric, Forge or NeoForge, with up to 6 GB of RAM and up to 20 GB of NVMe SSD storage for your mods, their configs and your world. Mods and modpacks are allowed, no credit card is involved, and a free server starts without a queue. The limits are just as plain: memory decides which packs fit, and the server is online 24/7 as long as you renew it.
Mods versus plugins
- Mods change the game itself: new blocks, mobs, machines and dimensions. They need a mod loader on the server, and most of them have to be installed in every player’s game too.
- Plugins change how a server behaves: ranks, land claims, an economy, minigames. They run on Paper or Purpur, and most of them ask nothing of the players.
You pick one per server. Plugins do not run on Fabric, Forge or NeoForge, and mods do not run on Paper. Paper’s documentation calls hybrid servers “fundamentally flawed and not recommended”. For plugins, see free Minecraft server hosting with plugins.
The three mod loaders, as of October 2026
A mod is built for one loader and one game version. A Fabric mod does not load on Forge, and a mod built for 1.21.1 does not load on 26.3.
| Loader | What it runs | Newest game version |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Fabric mods. Most also need the Fabric API mod | 26.3, with stable loader 0.19.5 |
| Forge | Forge mods | 26.3, with build 66.0.10 (none marked “recommended” yet; 26.2 has 65.1.0) |
| NeoForge | NeoForge mods | 26.3, with build 26.3.0.76 |
All three have builds for the current game, 26.3. Mods and packs often do not: All the Mods 10 is built for 1.21.1 and RLCraft for 1.12.2. Check which game version yours name before you create the server. The Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge comparison walks through the choice.
Players need the same mods as the server
Friends cannot join a modded server with a plain copy of the game. Mods that add content, such as blocks, items or mobs, have to be on the server and in every player’s game. Each player installs the same loader, the same game version and the same content mods.
There are two exceptions. Client-only mods, such as minimaps, stay on the players’ computers and do not belong on the server. Server-only mods run on the server alone. Modrinth lists each mod’s supported environments (client-side, server-side, or client and server), so you can check before you download.
The guide to adding mods to a Minecraft server covers the mods folder, dependencies and the usual startup errors.
Modpacks and server packs
A modpack is a ready-made set of mods with matching configs. The server does not always use the same download as the players:
- Modrinth packs are one
.mrpackfile for both. A server install leaves out the files marked as unsupported on servers and applies the pack’s server-only settings. - CurseForge packs have a normal download for players, and the author can upload a separate server pack beside it. All the Mods 10 and RLCraft both have one. Use it when it exists.
You can also build your own pack from mods that share a loader and a game version. We do not promise a one-click installer: expect to set a pack up by hand, following the modpack install guide.
How much memory a modded server needs
It depends on the pack. These are the authors’ own figures, checked on 12 October 2026. Most are written for a player’s computer, so read them as a starting point for a server.
| Pack | Author’s figure |
|---|---|
| Cobblemon Official Modpack (Fabric) | Minimum 2.5 GB, 3 GB or more for best performance |
| COBBLEVERSE | 6 GB or more for multiplayer hosting |
| RLCraft | 3 to 4 GB |
| FTB StoneBlock 3, FTB Direwolf20 1.20, FTB Skies | Minimum 4 GB (4096 MB), recommended 6 GB (6144 MB) |
| All the Mods 10 | No figure on its CurseForge page |
A free Severoo server has up to 6 GB of RAM. Compare that with the figure for your pack, and leave room: a server with several players online can need more than a number written for one player’s game. None of the figures above is a promise that a pack runs on a free plan. Free plans differ, so check yours on the plans page. The largest packs can ask for more memory than a free server has. If a pack asks for more than your plan gives, pick a lighter pack.
To check a pack’s own requirement:
- Open the pack’s page on Modrinth or CurseForge and search the description for “RAM” or “memory”.
- Look for a separate figure for servers or multiplayer. A single number is usually for the player’s game.
- If nothing is published, ask wherever the author offers support.
For your own mod list, the RAM calculator estimates from the number of players and mods.
What free modded Minecraft server hosting asks of you
No money and no credit card. It asks for a renewal. The server stays online 24/7 as long as you renew it, and it does not sleep when the last player leaves. Renewing is one click, paid for with account credits that are free to collect. It is due on a schedule that depends on your plan (every few hours on some plans). Our page on how free 24/7 hosting works explains what that means overnight.
You collect credits by claiming them daily, using the site and running your server, and completing small tasks. Credits cannot be bought, and collecting them this way is enough to keep one server online all the time, as long as you renew it on schedule. If a server is not renewed, it is suspended first. You have 7 days to re-enable it, and after that it is removed permanently. You can always create a new server afterwards, but removal is permanent, so keep your own copy of the world and of your mod settings.
