Free Minecraft server hosting 24/7: how it really works

By the Severoo team Published 10 min read

In short

A free Minecraft server can stay online 24/7, but only with a condition: a renewal timer, credits you keep claiming, or a trial that ends. Other free plans turn the server off when it is empty. This page explains each model, counts what 28 free hosts do, and lists what to ask before you rely on one.

On this page

Free Minecraft server hosting 24/7 exists, but in every case we found it comes with a condition. You renew the server on a timer, or you keep a credit balance topped up, or the offer is a trial that ends. Most other free plans turn the server off when the last player leaves. We run Severoo, a free host, so we are not neutral. Our servers run on a renewal timer, and each renewal is paid for with account credits that are free to collect. Every fact about another host on this page comes from that host’s own website, read on 12 October 2026.

What free Minecraft server hosting 24/7 really means

A Minecraft server holds on to its memory the whole time it runs, whether ten people are playing or nobody is. That memory costs the host money. A paid plan covers it with your money. A free plan has to ration it.

So on a free plan, “24/7” means one of two things:

  • Running all the time, with a condition. The server stays up while it is empty, as long as you renew it, keep credits in your balance, or are still inside a trial.
  • Reachable all the time, but not running. The server is off while it is empty and starts when someone wants to play. Some hosts advertise this as 24/7 too.

Both are fair offers when the host says which one it is. The test: can a friend join at 3 a.m. your time without waiting, and without you doing anything?

The four ways free hosts keep costs down

Sleeping when empty

The server stops a few minutes after the last player leaves. On some hosts it starts again when a player tries to join. On others, someone has to start it from the host’s website first.

For friends who play at different hours, wake-on-join works well: the first player waits while the server boots. If only the owner can start the server, your friends wait for you.

A queue to start

When all of a host’s free machines are busy, a start request waits in line. The wait is hard to predict: one host in the table below puts it at a few seconds to a few minutes. The friend who logs on first sits through it.

Renewal timers

The server keeps running, empty or not, until a timer runs out. Before then, someone presses renew. Among the hosts in the table below, the interval runs from 4 hours to 7 days. Some hosts add a sleep rule on top, so a renewed server can still be off while it is empty.

For friends at different hours, this is the closest a free plan gets to a paid server: anyone joins at any time with no wait, as long as the timer is alive. The price is the chore. With a short interval, a server that nobody renewed overnight is offline in the morning.

Severoo is in this group. A renewal on our free plan is one click, paid for with account credits that are free to collect.

Credits or ads

Server time is paid for with credits, which you earn by claiming them on a schedule or by watching ads. On some hosts an ad extends a renewal timer instead. For your friends it works like a renewal with a balance to watch: the server runs while the credits last and stops when they run out.

Renewals on Severoo spend credits too. Our credits cannot be bought, and collecting them the normal way is enough to keep one server online all the time, as long as you renew it on schedule. The ways to collect them are listed under how renewals work on our free plan.

What 28 free hosts do, counted on 12 October 2026

On 12 October 2026 we checked 28 hosts that came up in searches for free Minecraft or free game server hosting. We read the free-plan pages and help articles on each host’s own site. One site blocked our request, so we read archived copies of its pages instead. We did not create accounts or test servers. We sorted each host by the main rule on its free plan.

Main rule on the free plan Hosts out of 28
Runs on demand: stops or sleeps when empty 11
Renewal timer 7
Two or more rules combined 6
Credits you earn or claim 2
Queue to start 1
Always on, but as a trial that ends 1
  • At least 17 of the 28 say an empty free server stops or sleeps. That is 10 of the 11 on-demand hosts and all 6 combined ones, plus a renewal-timer host that also sleeps when empty. The eleventh on-demand host starts a server on request and does not publish what happens to an empty one.
  • At least 12 use a renewal timer. Seven as the main rule, and five of the combined hosts on top of sleeping. One of the seven offers its free plan for apps and bots only, and charges for game servers.
  • At least 5 describe a queue to start when capacity is full.
  • We found no free server that stays online permanently with nothing asked of you. Where a landing page said 24/7, another page on the same site added a renewal, a sleep rule, a credit balance or an end date.

The sorting is our reading of each site on one day, and hosts change their plans.

What ten free hosts do when nobody is playing

These are the ten hosts on our comparison pages, as their own sites described them on 12 October 2026. Our plan is the last row.

Host When nobody is playing Queue to start
Aternos Stops when the last player leaves; no playtime limit while someone is playing Queue to start when capacity is full
Minehut Sleeps when empty, wakes when a player joins; no playtime limit Not stated
Falix (FalixNodes) Stops 10 minutes after the last player leaves; anyone can restart it from the Start Server page; activity check in chat at most once every three hours Starts may queue briefly when a free machine is busy
FreeMcServer.net Renew every 4 hours (6 hours after watching an ad); expires 30 minutes after a renewal if nobody joins Advertised as “zero queue”
ScalaCube Renew every 2 days (“Renew for free” button), or the server and its contents are deleted Not stated
Minefort Not online 24/7 (paid plans are); locked after 3 days without use, with no automatic unlock Not stated
Play Hosting Not stated; free hosting is “best-effort” and servers are moved to storage when not in use Queue before a server becomes available: a few seconds to a few minutes
MCServerHost Sleeps after 15 minutes of inactivity; wakes when a player joins; deleted if not renewed within 7 days Not stated; the site says servers are ready in under 60 seconds
PowerupStack Stops 5 minutes after the last player leaves; starts again when a player joins Starts may queue at peak times
AxentHost No idle sleep; runs while the credit balance lasts, then hibernates with a backup. Credits are claimed by hand (15 per hour on the website) No start queue
Severoo (us) Stays online 24/7 as long as you renew it; does not sleep when empty. A server that is not renewed is suspended, then removed permanently if it is not re-enabled within 7 days No queue to start

Each model suits someone. Minehut and PowerupStack start the server when a player joins, so nobody in a small group has to press anything. ScalaCube and MCServerHost give you days between renewals, but both say a missed one ends in deletion. Our roundup of free Minecraft server hosts covers the rest.

How renewals work on our free plan

A free Severoo server is online 24/7 as long as you renew it. It does not sleep when the last player leaves, and there is no queue to start it. Renewing is one click, paid for with account credits that are free to collect. You collect credits by claiming them daily, using the site and running your server, and completing small tasks. You renew on a schedule that depends on your plan (every few hours on some plans). No credit card is involved, and credits cannot be bought.

A server that is not renewed is suspended first. You have 7 days to re-enable it. After that it is removed permanently, and you can always create a new server. Because removal is permanent, keep your own copy of the world.

That is what the 24/7 on our home page means: around the clock, for as long as the renewals keep coming.

No renewal, no queue, always online, forever, no time limit

The straight answer to each search term:

  • No renewal. Not on our free plan: the renewal is the condition. Among the 28 hosts, free plans with no renewal turn the server off when empty, run on credits or end after a trial. One does not publish its rule.
  • No queue. Yes on Severoo: a free server starts without a queue. In the table above, AxentHost and FreeMcServer.net also say they have none, and four hosts say a start can queue.
  • Always online. Only while the condition is met. For us that means while the server is renewed.
  • Forever. Read “forever” as “not a trial”, never as “runs untouched for years”. Three other hosts in the table say they lock or delete a server that goes unused or unrenewed. Ours is suspended when a renewal is missed, and removed permanently if it is not re-enabled within 7 days. Find that rule first.
  • No time limit. For a single play session, Aternos and Minehut both state there is no playtime limit. On Severoo, the timer to watch is the renewal.

What to ask a free host before you rely on it

We put the same questions to ourselves. Our own answer follows each one.

  1. How often do I renew, what does a renewal take, and can I renew early? Get the interval in hours or days. Our answer: you renew on a schedule that depends on your plan (every few hours on some plans), and renewing is one click, paid for with account credits that are free to collect. Collecting credits the normal way is enough to keep one server renewed all the time. We have not published whether you can renew early.
  2. What does a missed renewal cost me? A stopped server is an annoyance. A deleted world is a loss. Our answer: the server is suspended first, and you have 7 days to re-enable it. After that it is removed permanently. You can always create a new server.
  3. Is there a queue to start, and how long is it at busy hours? Our answer: there is no queue to start a free server.
  4. How long are my files kept if I stop playing? Look for the inactivity rule in the help center or the terms. Our answer: the rule is the renewal. A suspended server is kept for 7 days, then removed permanently.
  5. Who can start or renew the server? If it is only the account owner, your friends depend on you being awake. Our answer: we have not published this yet, so plan as if only the account owner can.

Whatever the answers, keep your own copy of the world. Our guide to uploading a world to a Minecraft server shows how to move one.

When to pay or host it yourself instead

A free plan suits friends who play most days and can live with one of the conditions above. Look elsewhere when:

  • Nobody can renew or start it for days at a time. A paid plan removes the chore. Minefort and MCServerHost both say their paid plans stay online 24/7.
  • Strangers depend on it. A public community server should not go down because one person overslept.
  • You have a spare computer and a good connection. You can host a Minecraft server on your own PC. It is online for as long as that PC stays on, and the network setup is yours to do.

If a free plan fits, make a free Minecraft server and set a reminder for the first renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Is there free Minecraft server hosting that is 24/7 with no renewal?

We did not find one. On 12 October 2026 we read the free-plan pages of 28 hosts. Every free server that keeps running while empty came with a renewal, a credit balance or an end date. The other free plans turn the server off when nobody is playing, apart from one host that does not publish its rule.

Does a Severoo server shut down when nobody is online?

No. It does not sleep when it is empty. A free Severoo server is online 24/7 as long as you renew it. The renewal is the condition: a server that is not renewed is suspended, and the 24/7 promise ends with it.

How often do I have to renew a free Severoo server?

Renewing is one click, paid for with account credits that are free to collect. You collect credits by claiming them daily, using the site and running your server, and completing small tasks. You renew on a schedule that depends on your plan (every few hours on some plans). Find out the interval for your plan before you count on the server being up overnight. The plans page explains how renewals work.

Is a server that wakes up when a player joins the same as 24/7?

Not quite. It is reachable at any hour, but it is not running while empty, and the first player waits while it starts. For a small group of friends that is often enough. It is not enough if you need the server up with nobody on it.

What happens to my world if I miss a renewal?

On Severoo, a server that is not renewed is suspended first. You have 7 days to re-enable it. After that it is removed permanently, and you can always create a new server. On other hosts it depends, so find the rule before you start building. Among the ten hosts we compare, the stated result of leaving a server alone ranges from a stop that anyone can undo to the server and its contents being deleted. Keep your own copy of the world either way.
