Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge comes down to which mods you want. All three are mod loaders: server software that lets a Minecraft: Java Edition server run mods. If you want a specific modpack, use the loader it was built for. If you are choosing freely, pick Fabric for a light server on a new game version, NeoForge for mods built for it on 1.20.2 and newer, and Forge for packs on old versions. A mod made for one loader does not run on another.
What a mod loader does
A vanilla server runs data packs and nothing else. A mod loader starts the same game and also loads the mod files, each a .jar, from the server’s mods folder. For mods that add blocks, items or mobs, every player needs the same loader and the same mods in their own game.
Mods are not plugins. Plugins run on Paper and Purpur, and players normally join with an unmodified game. If that is what you want, read Paper vs Spigot vs Purpur instead.

Java is not in the table because it follows the game version, not the loader. Minecraft 26.1 to 26.3 needs Java 25. Older versions need older Java: 21 for 1.20.5 to 1.21.11, 17 for 1.18 to 1.20.4, 16 for 1.17, and 8 for 1.16.5 and older.
What each loader is
Fabric
Fabric is a lightweight loader. Most Fabric mods also need Fabric API, a separate mod you put in the mods folder. Fabric’s own FAQ says it supports releases from 1.14 onward, and snapshots too. As of October 2026, Fabric API already has files for the 26.4 snapshots.
A Fabric server is one launcher jar. The download page gives you the file and the command that starts it.
Forge
Forge is the original mod loader, and it reaches furthest back. Its download site lists builds from Minecraft 1.1 up to 26.3. Forge marks builds as “latest” or “recommended”. On 12 October 2026 the 26.3 build was only marked latest, while 26.2 had a recommended build, 65.1.0.
You install a Forge server by running its installer with the --installServer option.
NeoForge and how it relates to Forge
NeoForge is a fork of Forge. Its announcement in July 2023 says almost all of the Forge team of the time moved to the new project. The first builds, for 1.20.1, stayed close to Forge. From 1.20.2 NeoForge went its own way, and mod authors build a separate NeoForge version of their mods.
Two details help when you read a pack’s page:
- The version number is the game version plus a build number. 26.3.0.76 is for Minecraft 26.3. For older games the leading “1.” is dropped, so 21.1 builds are for Minecraft 1.21.1.
- NeoForge recommends itself only for 1.20.2 and newer. For 1.20.1, its own docs point you to Forge.
The server installer works like Forge’s and creates the start scripts run.sh and run.bat.
Mods for one loader do not run on another
A mod file is built for one loader and one game version. A Forge mod will not load on Fabric, and a Fabric mod will not load on NeoForge. That includes Forge and NeoForge, which are now separate targets.
Many mods publish one file per loader, so read the file list before you download. Lithium, an optimization mod, is an example: for 26.3 it has a Fabric file and a NeoForge file, and no Forge file (as of October 2026). If one mod you want has no file for your loader, you need a different loader or a different mod.
Quilt is a fourth loader that runs Quilt mods and most Fabric mods. We could not confirm its mod support on 26.x as of October 2026, so check its site before you pick it.
Plugins do not run on any of these loaders. Paper’s docs call hybrid servers that mix mods and plugins “fundamentally flawed and not recommended”.
Which loader to pick for your situation
You want a specific modpack
The pack decides. Its page names the loader and the exact game version, and the server must match both. Three examples, read on 12 October 2026: All the Mods 10 is NeoForge on 1.21.1, the Cobblemon Official Modpack is Fabric on 1.21.1, and RLCraft is Forge on 1.12.2. Our guide to installing a modpack on a Minecraft server covers the rest.
You want the newest game version
All three loaders have a 26.3 build as of October 2026, so the loader is not what holds you back. The mods are. Each one has to be updated for 26.3 by its author, and that does not happen on release day for every mod. List the mods you want, then check each one’s files for 26.3 on your loader before you choose.
If Bedrock friends will join through Geyser, check that as well. As of October 2026 Geyser lists Java 26.2 as supported, not 26.3. See Java and Bedrock crossplay.
You want a light vanilla-plus server
Pick Fabric. It is one jar, and a few mods plus Fabric API make a small mods folder. Mods that Modrinth marks as optional on the client, such as Lithium, only have to be on the server. For commands, ranks and land protection with nothing for players to install, plugins on Paper fit better than mods: see how to install plugins.
You want an old favorite pack
That usually means Forge. Of the three, only Forge lists builds for versions before 1.14, where packs such as RLCraft live. Use the Java that version needs, not the newest one: Java 8 for anything up to 1.16.5. For a 1.20.1 pack, Forge is also the choice NeoForge’s docs recommend.
Before you install
Whichever loader you pick, mods need memory. Check the mod or pack page, then try the RAM calculator. Severoo offers Fabric, Forge and NeoForge as server software on the free plan, with up to 6 GB of RAM: see free modded Minecraft server hosting. When you are ready, follow how to install mods on a Minecraft server.
