Acceptable use policy

Last updated:

A free Severoo server is for running the games we support, for you and the people you play with. Everything else is off limits: no attacks, no mining, no unrelated services, nothing illegal and no tricks to fake renewals. This policy is part of our terms of service.

What a free server is for

Use your server to host a game we support and to play on it with your friends or your community. The game hosting page lists the games, and the plans page lists the limits. Inside those limits, how you run the server is up to you: public or whitelisted, survival or minigames.

On a Minecraft server, plugins, mods and modpacks are allowed, as long as each one is there for the game and follows the rules below.

What is not allowed

  • Attacks and scanning. Denial-of-service attacks, port scanning, probing or breaking into systems that are not yours, and sending spam. It makes no difference whether the target is us or someone else, or whether you call it a test.
  • Cryptocurrency mining. Of any kind and for any coin, including a miner hidden inside a plugin or a mod.
  • Proxies, VPNs and unrelated services. General-purpose network proxies, VPNs, tunnels, websites, file storage, bots for other platforms, and any other software that is not a game server we support or an add-on for it.
  • Anything illegal. Content or activity that breaks the law, including pirated games or software and other people's work shared without permission.
  • Malware. Storing, spreading or controlling malicious software, phishing, and plugins or mods built to steal accounts or to damage other people's servers and devices.
  • Harassment and harmful content. Harassing or threatening people, publishing someone's private information, and any content that sexualizes minors. For the last one there is no warning: we remove it, close the account and may report it to the authorities.
  • Evading limits. Using more than one account to get around the limits of the free plan or to come back after a suspension, and trying to break out of the technical limits of your server.
  • Faking activity or renewals. Keep-alive bots, scripts, macros, browser extensions or outside services that renew a server for you, and bots that pretend to be players.

Why renewals have to be real

Free capacity is limited. A renewal tells us that a person still wants the server. An automated one tells us nothing, and it takes capacity from people who are playing. Renewing is one click, paid for with account credits that are free to collect, and the plans page explains how it works. A renewal has to be a real person's click.

You answer for your server

You are responsible for everything on your server: the files you upload, the plugins and mods you install, and how you moderate your players. If a player breaks these rules on your server, deal with it. A whitelist and the moderation commands in the server commands guide are the usual tools.

Install plugins and mods only from sources you trust. If you find something malicious on your own server, remove it and tell us.

A Minecraft server must also follow the game's own rules, set out in the Minecraft End User License Agreement and the Minecraft Usage Guidelines. Severoo is not an official Minecraft service and is not approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft.

What happens when a server breaks the rules

We may suspend a server that breaks this policy, remove the content involved or close the account. For a small or accidental problem we try to warn you first. For attacks, mining, malware, illegal content or anything that puts other people at risk, we may suspend the server at once and without notice.

When we investigate a report or a sign of abuse, we may look at the server's files and logs. We may report illegal activity to the authorities.

If you think we suspended your server by mistake, write to support@severoo.com and we will look at it again.

How to report abuse

If a server hosted here is attacking you, breaking the law or breaking these rules, email abuse@severoo.com. Include:

  • the server address;
  • what happened, with the date, time and your time zone;
  • evidence you can share safely, such as screenshots or log lines.

Do not send us illegal images or files. Tell us where they are instead. If someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first.

The contact page lists every other way to reach us.
