Free Minecraft server hosting with plugins means two things: server software that can load plugins, and permission to add the plugins you choose. Severoo allows plugins on the free plan, on Paper or Purpur, with up to 6 GB of RAM and no credit card. The one condition is the renewal: a free server is online 24/7 as long as you renew it. Renewing is one click, paid for with account credits that are free to collect. It is due on a schedule that depends on your plan (every few hours on some plans). Here is what plugins are, where to get them safely and how many a server can hold.
You collect credits by claiming them daily, using the site and running your server, and completing small tasks. Credits cannot be bought, and collecting them this way is enough to keep one server online all the time, as long as you renew it on schedule. If a server is not renewed, it is suspended first. You have 7 days to re-enable it, and after that it is removed permanently. You can always create a new server afterwards, but removal is permanent, so keep your own copy of the world and of your plugins’ settings.
What plugins are and how they differ from mods
A plugin is a .jar file that adds features to the server: ranks and permissions, homes and warps, land protection, a log of who broke which block. Plugins run on the server. Your friends join with the normal Java Edition game and install nothing.
Mods can add new blocks, mobs and items, and players have to install the ones that add content.
| Plugins | Mods | |
|---|---|---|
| Server software | Paper, Purpur, Spigot | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge |
| Folder on the server | plugins/ |
mods/ |
| Players install something | No | Yes, for mods that add content |
| Typical use | Ranks, protection, commands, logging | New blocks, mobs, items |
The two do not mix. Paper’s documentation calls hybrid servers that try to load both “fundamentally flawed and not recommended”. If you want mods, start at free modded Minecraft server hosting.
Which server software runs plugins
- Paper is built for performance and loads Bukkit, Spigot and Paper plugins. As of October 2026 it has stable builds for Minecraft 26.3, the current Java release.
- Purpur is a fork of Paper with extra configuration and gameplay options. It runs the same plugins.
- Spigot runs Bukkit and Spigot plugins, but you compile it yourself with BuildTools.
- Vanilla, Mojang’s own server, runs data packs only.
On Severoo you can pick Paper or Purpur. Paper vs Spigot vs Purpur compares them.
Where to get plugins for a free Minecraft server safely
Download plugins from the place the author publishes them:
- Hangar, the repository run by the Paper team
- Modrinth
- SpigotMC resources
Paper’s guide to adding plugins also lists BukkitDev and GitHub. Pick the file for your game version and for Paper, Bukkit or Spigot. Some projects also publish a Fabric or Forge build, and that one will not load as a plugin.
A starter set of well-known plugins
Start with the ones that solve a problem you have.
- LuckPerms: permissions. Put players in groups and decide what each group may do.
- EssentialsX: more than 160 commands, including homes, warps, kits and teleportation.
- WorldEdit: an in-game map editor with selections, copy and paste, and brushes.
- WorldGuard: protects regions of land from griefing. It needs WorldEdit installed.
- CoreProtect: logs block changes so you can roll back damage.
- Chunky: generates chunks ahead of time, so the server does not have to create them while players explore.
- spark: a performance profiler. It has been bundled with Paper since 1.21, so there is nothing to install.
Plugins catch up with new game versions at different speeds. As of October 2026, LuckPerms, WorldEdit, WorldGuard and Chunky list Minecraft 26.3 on Modrinth. CoreProtect lists up to 26.2, and the latest EssentialsX release there lists 26.1.2. Check each plugin’s page for your version, then follow how to install plugins on a Minecraft server.
How many plugins fit in memory
There is no fixed number. Plugins differ too much: one that keeps a lot of data loaded can outweigh many small ones.
For an estimate, our Minecraft server RAM calculator suggests 3 GB for Paper with 10 players and 10 plugins, and 5 GB for 20 players and 30 plugins. Those are our own rules of thumb, not measurements.
A free Severoo server has up to 6 GB of RAM. The amount depends on the plan, so check the plans page first. Then add plugins a few at a time and run /spark health, which reports TPS, CPU, memory and disk use. How much RAM a Minecraft server needs explains what to do when memory runs short.
Bedrock players on a plugin server
Bedrock Edition players can join a Paper or Purpur server through Geyser, which is itself a plugin. It translates the Bedrock connection for the Java server. Its companion, Floodgate, lets Bedrock accounts join without a Java account.
Two limits to know first:
- Versions. As of October 2026, Geyser’s supported versions page lists Bedrock 26.30 to 26.52 and Java 26.2. Java 26.3 is not listed yet, so check before you choose a server version.
- Ports. Bedrock players connect over UDP, on port 19132 by default. Java players stay on TCP 25565. Your host may assign a different Bedrock port.
The setup is in Minecraft Java and Bedrock crossplay. For a mostly Bedrock group, see free Minecraft Bedrock server hosting.
