What a Minecraft server icon needs
A Minecraft server icon is the small square picture next to your server in a player's multiplayer list. Java Edition has supported one since version 1.7.2, and the server is strict about the file. The tool above always produces a file that meets every row of this table.
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | Exactly 64 × 64 pixels |
| Format | PNG |
| File name | server-icon.png |
| Where it goes | The server's main folder (its working directory), beside server.properties |
| Created for you | No. The server never generates one, so you add it yourself |
| If it is missing | Players see a gray default picture |
| Edition | Java Edition only |
The Minecraft Wiki lists the file on its server.jar page. The 64 pixel rule has no slack: Paper rejects an image that is not 64 pixels wide and 64 pixels high, and the game does not draw an icon of another size.
How to add the icon to your server
- Frame your picture in the tool and press Download server-icon.png.
- Open your server's files. On a hosted server that is the file manager in your control panel or an SFTP program. On your own computer it is the folder you start the server from.
-
Upload the file to the main folder, the one that contains
server.properties. If an oldserver-icon.pngis there, replace it. -
Check the name is still exactly
server-icon.png. A browser that already has a file with that name saves the next one asserver-icon (1).png, and the server ignores it. - Restart the server.
- In Minecraft, open the multiplayer server list and refresh it. The icon appears in your server's row.
If the row shows no player count either, the server may not be answering at all. Test it with the server status checker before you blame the picture. The line of text beside the icon is your MOTD, which you can write with the MOTD generator or set along with everything else in the server.properties generator.
Smooth or pixelated scaling
Almost every picture has to be resized to reach 64 pixels, and the two methods give very different results.
- Smooth blends neighboring pixels. Use it for photos, logos, drawings and anything much larger than 64 pixels. The tool shrinks big images in several half-size steps, which keeps thin lines and small text cleaner than one large jump.
- Pixelated (nearest neighbor) copies pixels without blending, so every edge stays hard. Use it for pixel art. It is cleanest when the area you crop is 8, 16 or 32 pixels wide, because each pixel then becomes an even block of 8, 4 or 2 pixels. In this mode the crop snaps to whole pixels.
When you add an image whose shorter side is 64 pixels or less, the tool starts on Pixelated. Larger images start on Smooth. You can switch at any time and the previews update at once.
Zoom and position
At 1x zoom the crop is the largest square that fits in your image, so a wide picture loses its left and right edges and a tall one loses its top and bottom. Zoom goes up to 16x, or until the crop is 8 pixels wide on a small image. The crop cannot leave the picture, so the icon never gets empty bars. Transparent areas in a PNG stay transparent.
The two previews
The true-size preview is the file exactly as it will be saved. The enlarged preview shows the same 64 × 64 pixels four times bigger with no smoothing, so you can inspect each one. If a detail is unreadable at true size, players will not be able to read it either.
Common mistakes
- The wrong size. A 128 × 128 or 512 × 512 image is not scaled down by the server. On Paper it is skipped and a
Couldn't load server iconwarning goes in the log. - The wrong name.
icon.png,Server-Icon.pngandserver-icon.png.pngare all ignored. The last one happens when your file browser hides extensions and you type.pngyourself. - The wrong folder. The file does not belong in the world folder or the plugins folder.
- No restart. Paper loads the file as the server starts (as of October 2026), not each time a player opens the list. A restart is the fix whatever server software you run.
- Too much detail. A screenshot or a line of text turns to mush at 64 pixels. One bold shape, a letter or a face works better.
- Someone else's artwork. Use a picture you made or have permission to use.
Bedrock Edition servers
As of October 2026, Bedrock Dedicated Server has no equivalent file. Its download contains no icon, and Microsoft's
list of Bedrock server.properties options
has no icon setting. Adding server-icon.png to a Bedrock server does nothing. The server name is the part you control there.
More setup help is in the guides, and the rest of the free tools are on the tools page.
